Quick and simple ways to update your home this autumn/winter

Keeping your home on trend can be as simple as moving furniture around, using the space in a different way, or picking a new colour scheme that brings your style bang up to date.

Take a look at our round-up of the very best UK influencers for inspiration on how to refresh your home for the change of seasons, without breaking the bank.

Rethink how you use space

Sometimes, all you need is to step back for a minute and rethink how you use the space in each room. Below, a blank wall in Ediebirdshouse’s kitchen has been repurposed into a cosy nook complete with chair, magazine rack and plants.

By using a rug to mark out the space, visitors can settle in without getting in the way, leaving whoever’s doing the cooking to make themselves busy!

Dark walls are king

The trend for dark walls is still going strong, as demonstrated beautifully by Jen Stanbrook in her living room. Dark walls are also perfect for north-facing rooms that struggle to get enough natural light.

If you’re brave enough to take the plunge, make sure to balance creamy dark grey walls with light, bright or colourful accessories.

Ladders and lights

What makes a home truly personal is the unexpected – elements you enjoy that surprise and delight visitors. Ellie at e.t.shown_home offers plenty of treats to her guests, and her use of ladders and lights throughout her home is a great example.

This ladder and light combo at the top of her landing offers practical illumination for those coming dark months, plus a gorgeous talking point (and check out those repeated circular rugs!). Best of all, a ladder can be easily moved and repurposed whenever you feel like it.

Update your gallery walls

Gallery walls have long been adored by influencers on Instagram as a simple and effective way to personalise your room or refresh the colour scheme without having to commit to paint.

In Emma Peleshok’s kitchen, she’s curated a homogeneous gallery by sticking to black and white frames, and used pops of colour within the artwork to bring the white wall to life. Take a moment this autumn to review and update your gallery wall – update photos of loved ones or move the frames around for a fresh new look.
