Pillow talk: Choosing the right pillow for you

How to choose the right pillow

When it comes to getting a good night’s sleep, a pillow is second to none in achieving that. Many of us don’t think about our choice of pillow until we sleep badly or suffer from a stiff neck in the morning.

Much like a mattress, there is no single pillow that is great for everyone. Pillows are available in a range of different sizes and shapes to suit different sleeping styles, so it is important to find the right one for you.  There are loads of different pillows out there for you to choose from, so here is our handy guide to help you get a better night’s sleep.

How to pick your pillow?

It is worth spending the time to find the right type of pillow for you as it will provide the correct balance of comfort and support. Pillows have a much more limited life span than a duvet cover (because of the weight of you head flattening it) and so over the years the level of support it provides can deteriorate.  Here is our quick and easy guide to finding the ideal pillow for you.

What’s your sleeping style

One of the most important things to consider when buying a new pillow is how you sleep.  A pillow should support your neck and aid good posture.  Remember to take your mattress into consideration; a firm pillow will not work well with a soft mattress.

Sleeping on your back – If you are most comfortable sleeping on your back then a medium-firm pillow is the ideal choice. This will provide support for your neck without affecting the alignment of your spine.

Sleeping on your side – If you sleep on your side then a firm pillow is recommended. This will keep the spine aligned and prevent hunching and a painful neck.

Sleeping on your front – For those that sleep on their front a soft pillow is recommended. This provides the right amount of comfortable cushioning without raising the neck and spine out of alignment.

Choosing the pillow filling

The fill of your pillow is a personal choice. Different fill types provide varying degrees of firmness and a range of different advantages so it is important to take these into consideration.

Synthetic Fillings

A synthetic pillow is the ideal choice for someone who suffers from allergies. There are a range of synthetic pillows to choose from including hollow and microfibre types.  A fine microfibre pillow will provide the closest match to a down pillow for those with a natural fibre allergy.

Memory Foam

Made from a non-allergenic, visco-elastic temperature sensitive material, memory foam pillows offer unique pressure relieving qualities. Allowing your head and neck to rest in a tension free position, memory foam is often recommended for orthopaedic use.

Feather and down pillows

The traditional choice, a feather and down pillow moulds snuggly around the head and neck to provide comfort and warmth. As a general rule, the more feather in a pillow, the firmer it tends to be. Pure down pillows tend to be much softer and lighter, but may not provide the support you are looking for.
