There is no question that your mattress will be the most important aspect of a good nights sleep; some prefer theirs to be firm whilst others like to lie on a blanket of feathers. Here at Linens Ltd we understand it’s important to look after your mattress and the posture of whoever lies on it, and this can be done with mattress protectors, mattress toppers or fleece under blankets – with a solid commitment to changing the mattress itself every 8 years.

But what is the difference between a mattress protector and a mattress topper? We have decided to clear up some of the misconceptions and frequently asked questions from our customers on what the differences are and how best to use them.

What is a mattress topper?

A mattress topper is an extension of your current mattress giving you extra comfort and cushioning while you sleep, or simply breathing new life into an older mattress before you replace it.  They usually measure about 4-8 inches thick and some even come in memory foam, moulding to your body providing the ultimate support to your back and neck.

They are relatively easy to clean, just vacuum over their surface in a well ventilated area, give it a good shake so it’s all puffed up – and it’s ready to be used again.

Types of mattress topper;

1) Feather and Down mattress toppers are made from hypoallergenic feathers with a microfibre cover to give comfort and hygiene.

What is a mattress protector?

A mattress protector creates a barrier from your skin to the mattress; it protects against sweat, dust mites, dead skin cells and other allergens. Build up of these intruders can lead to attacks of asthma and eczema, not to mention become extremely unhygienic. Every mattress should have a protector on top of it – not only do they keep you healthy but they prolong the life of the mattress.

They are available in all shapes and sizes and can be washed with your bed linen, you can even get pillow protectors that act in the same way – so both forms of protection should really become part of your bedding collection.

Types of mattress protector;

Polypropylene mattress protectors are made from an absorbent material that is anti-allergenic, light and easy to clean in the washing machine.
