Into the Blue – Colour Palettes for Your Home

Choosing the right colour palette for your home might seem like a daunting task, but building a cohesive scheme is less difficult than it first seems. In this blog post, we will focus on how to integrate shades of blue into your home.

Colour psychology of blue

Despite some negative connotations attached to the colour (think Blue Monday or Picasso’s Blue Period during which he only painted in shades of blue), there are also many positive associations with the colour blue. While colour psychology is extremely personal to an individual, many people assign the following feelings with the colour blue:

  • Calm
  • Serenity
  • Stability
  • Productivity
  • Reliability
  • Intensity

Blue in nature

Blue evokes feelings of serenity within people as it’s so strongly associated with nature, particularly the ocean. There are so many fluctuations in colour in nature, we’d recommend having a look at sites like National Geographic, and starting with an image to inspire your colour palette. Nature is a great source of inspiration for a palette, as the colours that occur together in the wild naturally compliment one another in terms of tone and contrast.

Integrating blue into your home

If you’re living in rented accommodation or cannot paint your walls, a great way to build colour into your interiors scheme is to use accessories and soft furnishings. Pick a colour palette of three colours that you love and that compliment each other nicely. If you’re not sure what colours go with what, you can use a colour wheel, such as this nifty little tool. With your palette picked out, you can then go on the hunt for accessories and soft furnishings in the right shades and tones.
