How to maximise space in your home

Modern living, whether in a house or flat, is often short on space. Just because you may have less square feet to work with doesn’t mean you have to compromise on design. To make the most of your home no matter how small, it is all about making the space work a little harder.

From creating multifunctional rooms to creative storage solutions and tricks, there are lots of fantastic ways to de-clutter and redesign your home.

The Bedroom

You spend an average of 8 hours a day asleep in your bedroom; wouldn’t it be great if you could create a peaceful getaway that is tidy and organised?

One of the most underused areas in your bedroom is under the bed. On average 4ft by 6ft; this space is available for the storage of blankets, summer duvets and much more. Instead of a solid bed frame opt for one with drawers built in. If you have open frame bed already, get yourself some storage boxes or drawers to fit underneath.

If you have a dressing table, swap your stool for a storage ottoman or chest. Padded on top to make a comfortable seat, this is a great way to create some extra storage in your home. Can’t fit your duvet or blankets in? Vacuum bags are great way to reduce the size of your spare duvets whilst keeping them clean and dust free.

Hallway

The hallway is probably one of the most abused areas in the home. The dumping ground for coats, shoes and the kids’ school bags, it is often difficult to keep this space clear. To get things organised keep coats on a coat rack behind your front door. If you’ve got the room, try adding a slimline console table to store keys, phones and other sundries. You can also choose from a range or tables with shoe storage compartments to save floor space.

To widen narrow hallways try adding a large mirror. This will give the illusion of a brighter, lighter and larger space. It’s also handy for checking your hair just before you leave!

Kitchen

Small kitchens are not just a problem in the modern home. The heart of the home, the kitchen should be given just as much design attention as the other rooms in your home. If you have a small kitchen or even an open plan space, you will need to focus heavily on creative storage solutions. A pots and pan rack as seen in traditional country kitchen is a stylish way to store your saucepans when not in use.

Make the most of cupboard space with inventive racking systems such as corner units and slimline larders. The more organised your cupboards are, the easier it will be to find ingredients and utensils when you need them.

Bathroom

The best way to create space in the bathroom is to organise your toiletries etc into porcelain holders, storage drawers and onto shelves. Avoid cluttering surfaces with your everyday toiletries and instead store items such as your toothbrush, hair brush or cotton wool pads in neat little boxes or jars.

Mirrored cabinets are a great multifunction unit, taking up less space than a separate unit and mirror. Installing cabinets under the sink is also a great way to make use of dead space.
