How to Choose the Best Pillow for a Great Night’s Sleep

Many people think that getting a good night’s sleep can be achieved with the right mattress. However, one very important element of the bed is often overlooked – and that’s the pillow. Buy the wrong kind and you’ve got allergies that will cause severe irritations or worse, worsen certain conditions such as spinal problems and neck pain.

When you want to get yourself and your family new pillows, here are some things you need to consider:

Choosing Pillows for Back and Neck Problems

Having the right kind of pillow for those who have back and neck problems is essential. Orthopaedic pillows are the best options – they’re specifically made to address these issues, while also giving you the comfort that you need to sleep through the night. These pillows have a deeper depression where the head lies, giving extra support to your neck and giving better alignment to your spine. Memory foam pillows are also a great choice for neck problems, as they mould to the shape of your neck or head and lumbar support pillows are also available for those who have lower back problems. Especially useful for those who need to work on a desk all day, they fill the gap between your lower spine and chair.

Choosing Pillows for Children

Before you buy your child a pillow, you need to evaluate whether he or she is old enough to use one. Children below 2 years old are not advisable to sleep with a pillow due to suffocation hazards. When you do buy your toddler his first pillow, make sure it is the right size, which is about 12″ x 16″ in size and 2-3″ in thickness. This smaller size, used instead of standard pillows prevents the hazards that bigger ones can pose.

The choice of fill type is also very important – choose polyester or latex pillows, as these are allergy-free and odour-free. Down and feather can cause asthma attacks and allergies, and their softness may pose suffocation hazards as well.

Choosing Pillows for Adults

Your pillow choice should depend on your sleeping position. If you usually lie on your back, choose a thinner pillow that will give your neck and spine the neutral alignment they need to make sleeping comfortable. If you constantly lie on your side, choose a firm pillow that will fill the distance between your ear and shoulder. And when lying on your stomach, a flat pillow is best to support the neck and spine alignment.
Fill type will also depend on whether you have allergies or not. If you don’t, then the down or feather fill types are the best options – they are the most luxurious and provide great insulation. They’re also very lightweight.
