Getting a good night’s sleep – Is your mattress good enough?

The average person, (not including those of us with young children!), spends about a third of their lives asleep, which, if you think about it, makes our bed one of the most important assets we have. However, if you’re not getting a good enough quality of sleep, it can lead to health problems and potentially affecting your immune system and your mood. This is why the choice you make when looking at mattresses is so important, and also explains why there are so many variations on the market. So, how do you choose a mattress that’s right for you?

When to change your mattress

The first thing you need to think about is whether your current mattress is working for you. If you notice that you’re waking with aches and pains, a stiff neck or back, or still feel tired when you wake, then these are some of the telltale signs that should warn you it’s time for a change. Similarly, if your mattress starts to sag in the middle, is visibly looking discoloured or you were a good 7-10 years younger when you bought it, it’s time to look for a new one.

Which mattress should you buy?

There are various different mattresses on the market, and it’s wise to know what kinds there are before you visit a shop, or order online. Here, we list some of the most common types of mattress and how they’re made. This should help you choose what’s right for you.

1.     Pocket Sprung

A pocket-sprung mattress has a large number of springs sewn into the pockets within the mattress itself. Each spring works to create support where needed, which means they are a good bet for most people.  Ideally suited for those sleeping with a partner, they’re not likely to wake you if he or she turns over in the night.

2.     Open Coil

Usually the cheapest of the bunch, an open coil mattress contains springs, but not in individual pockets. Instead, the springs are linked across the width, and length of the mattress, so beware if you’re sleeping with a partner who moves around a lot at night, as you will more than likely be woken by movements.

3.     Memory Foam

Made up of foam that follows the shape of your body, many people have turned to this type of mattress in recent years. People with back or neck problems can find relief with this type of mattress, but they can make some people feel a little more “hemmed in” which doesn’t make for a great night’s sleep.

Looking after your new mattress

So, you’ve chosen the nicest mattress that suits you perfectly. You’ll certainly want to keep it for some time to come, so looking after it is the next priority. Following the tips below will ensure that your mattress stays perfect for much longer.

1.     Purchase a mattress protector

Sounds simple, but many people don’t bother. These provide a barrier between you and your new mattress, ensuring it stays fresher for longer. Whilst you can wash a mattress protector, you can’t get your mattress in your washing machine!

2.     Air your bed

If you remove your bedding for a short time each day, you’ll be doing your mattress a favour. Any moisture coming which may come from heat from your body will dry out and therefore reduce damage.

3.     Turn your mattress

Some manufacturers prefer you to turn your mattress every few months to prolong their life. However, you should certainly check first as not all mattresses are the same.

These tips should certainly ensure that your brand new mattress provides you with a great night’s sleep for much longer!
