Winter has arrived and many of us are thinking about ways to help keep the house warm. Whilst homeowners are regularly advised to install double glazing or pay for efficient insulation to be put in the loft, there are also lots of inexpensive ways to keep your house feeling cosy.

Keeping your house warm without turning up the heat

In recent weeks the temperature has dropped and we are all starting to feel the cold. And while we all know best practices such as adjusting the thermostat and making sure you seal off all drafts, there are definitely lots of little tricks we can all employ to keep our homes warm this winter.

Change your sheets

It might sound odd, but changing your cotton sheets to a flannelette set is tremendously effective when it comes to keeping warm this winter. Soft to the touch and super cosy, we would recommend changing all your sheets this season. If you’re really cold one evening, throw on an extra blanket or comforter for an extra layer.

Layer up

In your home, the floor accounts for as much as 10% of heat loss if not properly insulated. You know what it’s like to stand on a tiled kitchen floor in the morning – brrr! Especially great for insulating a tiled and wooden floor, add a rug to any room you feel is lacking in warmth. Deep, shaggy pile rugs are the best for keeping the heat in and will also look great in your living room or bedroom.

Insulate your doors and windows

A relatively cheap way to keep your house warm, thermal lined curtains can be used on all windows and even your back and front doors. Don’t worry, you don’t need to take them down in the summer as they will also help keep you house cool when closed. Bonus!

Stop draughts

If you are getting nice and cosy there is nothing worse than feeling a draught from the front door. Vaguely reminiscent of a sausage dog, and often called so, a draught excluder will keep those pesky draughts out. The good thing is that you can move this from room to room if required as they require no fitting.

Try the old-fashioned way

Hot water bottles and blankets might seem a little old-fashioned, but they definitely work. At the end of the day one of the best ways to keep warm is to focus on yourself and not the house. If you’re feeling cold but have followed our other top tips, why not make yourself a nice hot drink and cuddle up under a blanket on the sofa.
