5 examples of how to save space in a small bedroom

No matter what the size of your bedroom, it’s always hard to keep it clean and organised with all your clothes, beauty products and decorative extras surrounding the bed. Having a small bedroom can make the situation harder, with fewer places to hide your stuff – you’re presented with a whole new challenge of space saving and storage.

We’ve put together some ideas for small bedrooms, from bed linen storage to utilising all available nooks and crannies so you can create a clean, spacious environment without holding a weekly car boot sale or over-crowding your loft.

1) You don’t really need a bedside table

The fact is, with a smaller bedroom your floor space will be limited. Once you have your essentials like the bed and clothing storage set up, there may not be enough room for much else, and that’s okay. Whilst having a personal table next to your bed can be a nice touch – you can buy shelves that work just as well and they neatly fit into any corner or wall space.

2) Hang your lamps

Similar to the bedside table, by hanging your bedside light from the ceiling you are saving valuable floor space. Choose from a massive selection of lamp shades to match your bedroom decor – you can create any lighting effect to give the room the colour or mood of your choice. If you’re unsure on how to re-wire your electrical cables make sure you ask a professional.

3) Under the bed

Unless you own a low-rise Japanese mattress, we are almost certain you will have some room under the bed. This bed-sized square footage is often unused but can offer much needed storage for shoes, clothes, beauty products and more – you just need to choose what to store them in! We suggest you invest in some wheeled drawers, or vacuum pack storage boxes to hide away under a patterned platform valance.

4) Shelves Shelves Shelves

We’ve already suggested shelves as an alternative for your bedside table, but the truth is – shelves are the perfect answer for almost all space saving troubles. They are available in so many colours, shapes, sizes and designs – simply add your favourite pictures, books or accessories to each shelf and immediately you’ve transformed your table tops whilst adding your own personality to your decor.

5) Curtains vs. blinds

Small bedrooms can often mean small windows – if this is the case, then be wary of using heavy set, dark curtains for your window dressing. Dark, heavy curtains can take up a lot of room and create a cluttered look if there isn’t enough space surrounding them. For a cleaner, sharper aesthetic we suggest loose and light curtains or a simple blind so as not to detract from the light or shape of the window area.
