Lockdown Changes ‘Happy’ Homes into ‘Stressful’ Homes

Our national survey of 1,098 people has revealed that while most people (41%) would describe their typical mood since quarantine began as ‘quite positive’, the lockdown period has caused a certain amount of tension and stress within households.

Our survey revealed that when deciding on the best word to describe the atmosphere in their home before the lockdown began, the most common answer was ‘happy’ (29%). In comparison, when describing the atmosphere in their home following the lockdown period, the most common answer was ‘stressful’ (25%).

When asked about how they are enjoying the additional time spent with family/household members, 64% are enjoying it quite a lot, or very much. 29% of people are indifferent to the additional time spent with family, and revealed that they are neither enjoying it nor not enjoying it, and 2% are not enjoying it at all. In fact, 22% of respondents had even confessed to spending longer in the bathroom than usual in order to have more time to themselves.

As well as enjoying time with family (and a little alone time), almost half of respondents (47%) agreed that they ‘couldn’t think of anywhere they would rather be’ than within their home. 46% of respondents have started what they consider to be a significant DIY project since lockdown began, with the intention of adding value to their property or simply enhancing their quality of life.

One in four respondents agreed that they had spent significantly more time in their gardens during lockdown, perhaps due to the hot weather. Additionally, 26% of respondents have focused their attention on their gardens and have undertaken a DIY project, with a further 8% planning a garden project in the coming months.

Of those who are currently or have been working from home during the lockdown period, 48% described their mood since lockdown as ‘quite positive’, compared to only 36% of those who are not working from home. Most respondents (65%) do not have a separate office they can work from, compared to only 35% who do.

We can all relate to the people who spent a little longer in the bathroom for some peace and quiet! It’s interesting to see that the results of the survey have revealed so much about how people are feeling about their homes in lockdown.

We’re not surprised to see how many people are considering major DIY projects as we’ve all spent so much time within our homes in the past few months, thinking about how we can improve the space.
