We often focus on getting the Christmas tree ready or hanging lights and forget the little finishing touches. Why not make your Christmas celebrations a little more special this year with a festive themed table and decorations.

5 tips for decorating your Christmas table

Hosting a festive celebration this holiday season? If you want  to put on an event to remember this Christmas, take a look at our top tips for creating a magical table that your friends and family will enjoy.

Choosing great table linen

Before you add the final sprinkling of sparkle, it is important to get a good foundation for your table. There are a number of different combinations and options available, so decide on a theme before diving in. Available in both festive green and red, our Angelica Christmas tablecloth is a great choice for a traditional Christmas table. Featuring a gold jacquard festive print, it would make the ideal base for your table.

For a modern and more contemporary look, opt for a cream or white tablecloth with gold or silver accessories. Our Paoletti Alexis tablecloth will add a touch of class to your festive table and a hint of sparkle.

Toppers and runners

It’s Christmas, so why not go all out. To add a final flourish to your festive table add a tablecloth topper or runner.  Layer our Angelica Christmas tablecloth in green with our Paoletti Scroll Poinsettia table topper in red to add that perfect Christmas touch. Our red topper would also look great with any plain cream or white table cloth for a subtle finish.

If you have a beautiful wooden or glass table and don’t want to cover it up, opt for a festive table runner. Lining your table, a runner will finish off your table perfectly. Try our Paoletti Beethoven faux silk table runner in ivory or spice.

Napkins, placemats and placeholders

If you’re having a Christmas dinner with all the family, it’s nice to add the extra fineries including napkins, placemats and placeholders.

Mats and name-cards will help to organise your guests and prevent the pre-sit-down shuffle when no one knows where to sit. For a homemade, rustic feel tie festive parcel tags to the stem of your wineglasses or print your own name cards. If you’re not that creative you can also buy a range of different placeholders which can be reused every year.

If you have gone for a coloured table cloth, opt for a matching napkin. This creates a consistent design and professional finish. If you’ve gone for a white or cream table cloth, you can either choose a matching napkin or contrasting colour. A coloured napkin is a great way to add a splash of colour to a neutral table.

Florals and centrepieces

The shape and size of your centrepiece will depend on the shape and size of your table; the important thing to remember is not to go too big and leave no room for food and drink. If you have limited space, opt for a tall decoration that adds height instead of a long centrepiece.

Your local florist will be able to create a stunning festive centrepiece of your choice if you want to go for a floral decoration. If however you want to create your own there are lots of different options. Wash out an old jam jar and fill with holly from your garden; finish with a festive ribbon.  If you want to add some candles, add a taper in the centre of your holly. For a modern twist, fill a glass vase with cranberries and a small amount of water. Place a floating candle on tip and light.

Crackers and decorations

The only way to finish off your festive table is with Christmas crackers and favours. For a personal touch you could create your own Christmas crackers with unique presents for your guests. There are a number of sets available or simply build your own using wrapping paper and a cardboard tube.
