How to create the perfect Christmas guest room

The festive season is almost upon us! It’s time to start picking out presents, decking the halls, and stuffing the turkey.

If you’re hosting dinner at your home this year and having family around to stay for the Christmas period, you’ll want somewhere nice and cosy for them to stay. This guide will provide tips on creating the perfect guest room ready for the festive season.

Cosiness is key

As the evening winds down to an end and your guests are getting ready to hit the hay this Christmas, you’ll want to make sure you have set up a comfortable space for them to unwind in.

Don’t forget to include throws, scatter cushions, and other cosy elements, such as a dressing gown for them to snuggle up in after dinner. You can create a homely and pleasant atmosphere in other ways too, such as by keeping their room at a comfortable temperature and adding mood lighting, such as fairy lights, bedside lamps and candles.

Most of all, you’ll want your guests to be comfortable during their stay this Christmas time. Why not treat them to a fresh new bedspread that fits with the theme of your seasonal decor? The Fusion Christmas Fairisle 100% Brushed Cotton duvet cover set is an affordable seasonal bedspread and a surefire way to add comfort to your guest room.

Festive features

Let’s face it – it’s not Christmas without a bit of festive cheer!

Apply this when decorating your guest room this party season and be sure to include a few baubles here and there. If you’re decorating your spare room for children, you can even add Christmas stockings to the foot of their bed so that they have a treat to wake up with on Christmas morning.

Why not use what you already have in the room and festi-fy it? For example, you could use wrapping paper to make the laundry bin look like a giant present!

We have a wide range of children’s Christmas bedding available on our site, such as the Catherine Lansfield Christmas Unicorn duvet cover set, which will definitely add some Christmas sparkle to their evening.

Seasonal Scents

There’s no better feeling than walking into a room and being hit by those wonderfully nostalgic seasonal scents that truly make you say “It’s Christmas!” Think spiced apple, mulled wine, toasted marshmallows, gingerbread, and Christmas pine.

The easiest way to replicate these scents is to pop a few scented candles in the room, but if you’re catering for children and you want to avoid using open flames, you can incorporate reed diffusers and plug-in air mystifiers instead.

Add some Christmas magic

No matter the age of your guests, it’s always a pleasant surprise to find a little bit of magic at Christmas.

Try leaving a candy cane under their pillow along with a welcome note for them to find later, or for younger children, you can include a seasonal stuffed teddy for them to cuddle up to at night, along with some ‘reindeer food’ for them to sprinkle outside before they go to bed ready for Santa and his helpers’ arrival.

Space to store

Although your guests might not be staying all that long, they’ll still want some space to store their belongings during their stay – especially if you plan on gifting them lots of presents!

Include space for storage, such as wardrobes, a chest of drawers, or even a footstool that lifts up into a trunk. This will help keep their room clutter-free during their stay and help them to feel more at home rather than living out of a suitcase for the next couple of days.  Our Emma Barclay Faux Linen Foldable Storage Ottoman is the perfect solution, as it’s neutral enough to go with any home decor and can be easily stored beside or under the bed.

Last but not least, you’ll want to include some treats for your guests to enjoy when they retreat to their room for the night.

For the parents, opt for a miniature bottle of wine and some festive chocolates. For the children, you can leave out a Christmas bedtime story along with a mince pie. If you want to go all out, why not make a hamper with some sleepover essentials so that your guests can really unwind? This could include a facemask, seasonal pyjamas and slippers, and their favourite Christmas movie to watch as they drift off to sleep. The Slumberzzz Women’s Felt Snowflake slippers are a great option for keeping your guest’s feet toasty warm during their stay.
