Survey Results: ‘Getting Enough Sleep’ and ‘Excellent Sleepers’

In our survey of sleep habits and routines, 37% of our 1,153 participants said they ‘got enough sleep’ and 5% said the quality of their sleep was ‘excellent’. We decided to look deeper at the answers to these respondents to discover what helps them to achieve this higher quality of sleep. Below is a list of their most popular answers.

Highlights – Getting Enough Sleep

We analysed the data from those who claimed they are getting enough sleep – 37% of our survey respondents. Below you can find out more about these people – and perhaps get some tips and tricks.

Demographic profile

  • 37.4% of 1,153 participants
  • Aged 35-44 year olds – 25.5%
  • Female – 81.2%
  • Married or in a civil partnership – 59.4%
  • Live with their partner (without any children) 43.1%
  • Work full time – 38.6%

Bedroom

  • Share a bed with their partner – 66.1%
  • Have a double or king sized-bed (45.5% and 33.6%)
  • Use a lighter, three-tog duvet in the summer (48%), and an all-season, 9-12 tog, duvet in the winter (49.4%)

Quality of sleep

  • 12% said their quality of sleep was ‘excellent’
  • 70% said it was ‘good’
  • 15.3% said it was ‘neither good nor bad’

Sleep habits

  • Use their phone in bed – 51.7%
  • Don’t take naps – 45.2%
  • Don’t watch TV, films or videos in bed – 60.8%
  • Read in bed – 66.6%
  • Don’t play video games – 89.8%

Bedtime routines

  • Go to bed at a different time every night (36.2%) or the same time every night (31.8%)
  • Wake up at the same time every morning (36%) or the same time during the week but a different time at the weekend (34.1%)
  • Get eight hours of sleep during the week (40.4%) and at the weekend (45%)
  • During the week, go to sleep at 10.30pm (23.7%), or 11pm (19%), and wake up at 7am (18.3%) or 7.30am (15%)
  • During the week they wake up feeling ‘groggy’ (20.2%), or ‘rested’ (18.1%)
  • At the weekend, the most common time to go to sleep is at 11pm (20.2%) and to wake up at 8am (19%)
  • On the weekend they wake up feeling ‘rested’ (23.9%)

Highlights – Excellent Sleepers

When looking at the results from the 5% who claim their sleep quality is excellent, we found out that being married, sharing a bed with a partner (and no one else) and getting enough sleep was important. Watch the video or read on to find out more.

  • Have a double or king sized-bed (38.3% and 33.3%)
  • Use a lighter, three-tog duvet in the summer (46.7%), and a heavier, 13.5+ tog (40%) duvet in the winter

  • Get enough sleep – 86.7%
  • Use their phone in bed – 56.7%
  • Take a nap once or twice a week – 26.7%
  • Don’t watch TV, films or videos in bed – 61.7%
  • Read in bed – 63.33%
  • Don’t play video games – 86.7%

Bedroom routines

  • They either go to bed at the same time every night (40%) or go to bed at a different time every night (40%)
  • They typically wake up at the same time every morning (36.7%) or wake up at a different time every day (35%)
  • Get eight hours of sleep during the week (43.33%) and at the weekend (35%)
  • During the week, go to sleep at 10pm (21.7%), or midnight (18.33%), and wake up at 7am (18.3%) or 7.30am (15%)
  • During the week they wake up feeling ‘awake’ (20%), or ‘refreshed’ (18.3%)
  • At the weekend, they go to sleep at midnight (20%) or 10.30pm (18.3%) and wake up at 7am (18%) or 8am (16.7%)
  • On the weekend they wake up feeling ‘refreshed’ (26.7%) and ‘awake’ (21.7%)
