Choosing the right hotel linen

Bed sheets are one of the most important features when running a hotel; not only do you have to give your guests somewhere warm and safe to spend the night – the more comfortable they sleep, the more likely they are to return and recommend your business.

The first thing your guest will notice will be the fresh, crisp sheets laid out on the bed – so what would be the best material and design for a hotel? We’ve listed 3 important factors to consider when choosing the bed linen for long lasting elegance within your hotel or B&B.

Bed linen

When choosing pillow, sheets and duvet covers – thread count will be the best way to determine the quality of the material. The higher the thread count, the more luxurious the cotton.

• 120-170: Very thin sheets for basic use, very affordable and mainly be found in hospitals.

• 200: Light cotton, ideal for summer months. These sheets will be used in budget hotels.

• 400: The most popular of cotton products, remains cool and durable and used by most hotel chains worldwide.

• 600: Moving into high quality this cotton lustrous, soft and very smooth.

• 800-1000: Pure indulgence with an even fuller and softer material.

The right fabric

Choosing the fabric really depends on personal preference and the effect you’re looking for in your hotel rooms.

• Percale is a closely woven fabric made from both carded and combed yarns. Usually only found in high thread-count fabrics giving the fabric a soft, silk-like finish. Percale is a very strong fabric and will be able to last longer through multiple washes, making it ideal for hotel or B&B use.

• Sateen has more threads on the top surface than other fabrics, resulting in a softer finish with a sheen that looks like satin. Cotton sateen sheets tend to be softer than those with a Percale weave so can be used as a more luxurious option.

Washing tips

Keep your new linen fresh and clean for it to stay in good condition, keep whites and darks separate and use fabric conditioner where possible. When re-making the bed, ensure that your sheets match and can be fitted to each pillow and mattress perfectly. Tuck in all loose fabric and ensure all creases are straightened out, this will give your bed sheets a fresh and inviting look for your next guests.
