5 No-fuss weekend DIY tasks to spruce up your living room

interior design

With a full-time job and kids, the only time left for DIY is the weekend. A great opportunity to spruce up your home, it’s a great feeling to be able to take a day or two for creative tasks. We’re not asking for you to completely redecorate your living room in two days; instead get crafty and be inspired with these easy, done-in-a-weekend projects that will totally revamp your living room.

Scatter some cushions

One of the quickest and most cost effective ways to reflect seasonal changes is with a selection of cushions. If you’re starting with a neutral base, try adding a few different accent colours or patterns. Play with different colour combinations and have fun with it; mixing fabrics and prints can have a really modern and expensive feel, but try to keep some commonality within your selection for that design-magazine look.

If you’re feeling creative you could also try making some cushion covers yourself. An easy envelope-style cushion cover can be whipped up in half an hour on a machine or even sewed by hand. Not sure where to start? Check out this handy step-by-step tutorial.

Get the paintbrush out

I know we said there was no redecorating; but this is only a small project. The must-do interior design trend of the year; try introducing a splash of colour into your room by painting a simple chair or side table. Give your chosen item a quick sand-down and prime, then slap on a few coats of your paint. Voila – a statement piece of furniture at a fraction of the cost.

Not feeling brave enough to paint your chair a bright colour? Why not dip the legs of a stool or table for a modern twist.

Lay down a rug

Introducing a rug can totally transform your living room. If going for a contemporary and sleek look, try to avoid florals and traditional style rugs – these can be dated and darken a room. To keep your living room bright and modern, opt for geometrics and bold colours – remember if you have a small room, keep things as simple as possible to avoid a cluttered feel. If eclectic is your style – why not try a pompom or shaggy rug; great under foot and totally out there.

Get a throw

Add pattern and colour to your living room by draping a simple throw over an armchair or sofa. If you’ve got a plain, neutral sofa opt for a bold colour or a throw with a geometric pattern. Modern whilst still homely and comfortable, you can easily change the style of your throws and blankets as the seasons change.

Create a picture wall

With some imagination, a few family photos and a selection of your favourite artwork you can create a stunning picture wall to rival top London galleries. Put a modern twist on a classic by grouping your photos together, mixing different sizes and frame styles. To get the ‘random’ placement right; arrange your photos on the floor before you start hanging them up – this way you can move them around until you’re totally happy with how they look.
