How often should I replace my pillow?

how often change pillow

Finding the right pillow is a blessing. From feather and down to memory foam, there’s almost too much choice when looking for the perfect place to rest your head at night – so it’s no wonder most of us find it hard to let go once we have a pillow we love.

Unfortunately, studies have shown that you should be replacing your pillow at least every 12 months. Perspiration, fluids, oils and skin flakes collect over time and create the perfect breading ground for dust mites, mould and other germs; so if you suffer from allergies, your pillow will become your worst nightmare.

How do you know your pillow needs to go?

Pillows are often forgotten when it comes to bedroom hygiene, a mattress is more noticeable when it starts to lack support – but pillows are just as important. A pillow protector will aid longevity, especially a zipped entrance.

If you have a polyester or foam pillow, fold it in half and place a shoe on top of it –  if the pillow does not spring back to shape and knock the shoe off – it’s time to buy a new one. For feather pillows, fold it in half and squeeze all the air out; when you release the pillow it should unfold on it’s own. Inexpensive polyester or foam pillows will need replacing around every 6 months, but memory foam pillows could last up to 30 months due to their structural integrity.

The right support

Experts say that an old pillow can cause improper neck alignment and really affect your spine; resulting in back, neck and leg pain – even headaches! High quality pillows should be able to support you for up to 2 years, but the more affordable the pillow – the more often you will need to replace it.
